In its never-ending mission to make comic creation easier for the masses, Smith Micro software is releasing another tool to democratize the artistic process.

Earlier this year, a new version of the long-running graphics program Manga Studio enabled comic book fans to fill panels with their own dynamic heroes and heroines. Now a brand-new program promises to bring those characters — and even the panels — to life.
MotionArtist, launched Tuesday, allows users to add movement to existing comics or create entirely new and diverse projects. Smith Micro's VP of Operations Steve Yatson told Mashable the goal behind MotionArtist was designing the simplest process for people who might not have a background in cartoons, but want to dive right in:
'Really what we've tried to do is create an animation tool for non-animators.'
In the program, users can create panels of any shape and then drop in layered images (like a Photoshop file). Then, using an intuitive point-to-point system, they can set the elements on paths and move them around within the panel. Need that superhero to leap a tall building in a single bound? Check. Want those villainous eyebrows to furrow menacingly? Done.
Motion comics have grown in popularity in recent years, with popular comic book titles like X-Men making the jump to Netflix or YouTube, where they can be watched instead of read.

Now comic fans can do the same: plan, produce and publish their work, all from one program. MotionArtist features share options for instant posting to Facebook or YouTube, as well as exporting in HTML5 when projects are finished.
Yatson says the program's designers aimed to make the process entirely visual, not technical.
'It's a lot more intuitive for someone that's not really an animator,' Yatson says. But a user can always access the animation information behind the scenes at any time.
The applications for MotionArtist don't end in a comic panel. Yatson touts the program's versatility as much as its simplicity — almost anything you might want to accomplish with moving text and pictures is possible. MotionArtist could be a new program-of-choice for compiling a stylish picture slideshow. Or, it could break the monotony of PowerPoint and become a go-to tool for slick office presentations. And with HTML5 functionality, web designers can even create interactive banner ads simply.
The user base is much wider than just comic fans, and it will be up to users to define the program's potential after wide release.
After launching at Comic-Con last summer, MotionArtist has been downloaded in beta 50,000 times, and testers have pushed the boundaries of what the program could be. The idea of animating panels sprung from this kind of external input, Yatson says.
